psychedelic frogfish

Psychedelic frogfish discovered in 2008. Image taken by David Hall.

This frogfish may be using the extra tissue around its face to find its way around in the dark. And these colors that stand out against a black background are actually a great camouflage in a coral habitat. Check out National Geographic’s reporting on the top ten new species described in 2009. (Described, but not necessarily discovered.) Of course, there was also a new species of sea slug!
